A complex piece that is clearly the work of an expert weaver. You see it first in the tight knots of fine-spun wool and the exquisite patterning in which a lozenge motif radiates from a central medallion. Strict symmetry adds to the sense of formality as does the intricacy. It is filled with branched symbols, bordered on all sides, and either signed by the maker or inscribed to the intended owner. These all point to the skilled hand and pride of ownership that defines a serious piece. But, typical of utilitarian Berber art, it is an object both treasured and used and the effect of time has added greatly to its beauty. Once red and magenta abrash, it has worn to iridescent greens and brown, a few small traces of pink the only reminder of the red that once was. True indigo and cream add silvery flash and the use of different knots leave the motif almost embossed. Overall it is an elegant example of the finest Berber weaving traditions.
