An old piece with much wear that brings real visual interest and texture. Borderless in the tradition of older Beni Ourains, an intricate filled lozenge network covers the entire field but for one row of eight pointed stars at the bottom. In charcoal brown and subtle but bright yellow highlights, the symbols appear symmetrical and almost formal but, under closer inspection, break in unexpected ways. There are quirks and jogs throughout--one diamond that is off just so, a row gone aslant. In one spot the motif breaks entirely only to start again. Despite a busy motif and many shifts, the soft colors and echoes of a formal approach make for a sophisticated rug. But it is rustic too, with uneven wear that leaves some patches of higher soft pile. The rich cream background has been knotted in single knots and the dark wool in double Berber knots so that they wear differently, putting the motif in slight relief. In very good condition despite its age, soft and charming because of it.
