Beni Saaden Love and Marriage 10' by 6'1"
A study in basics: line and symbols and wool. Adjacent to the Beni Ourain tribes, this region shares its neighbor’s typical lozenge motif and natural palette. But the Beni Sadden rugs are known for their wool and here it is densely woven, plush and shimmering, the basis for a substantial, elegant piece. In buttery cream with a grey motif that turns to chocolate brown toward one end, the composition fills with a free-form lozenge network that looks hand drawn. There are personal touches throughout, a few symbols with two figures most prominent. One lozenge contains a cross. Knots of colorful acrylic show up briefly. The defining luxury of the wool contrasts beautifully with the freedom of the piece which is most notable in its asymmetry. Rudimentary male lines run down the sides for much of the rug but not all and the entire composition is shifted slightly to one side. In excellent condition with fringe on one end.
