The woven skill and heft of a sleeping rug in curly wool and an unusual palette. Most of the fade and wear of this piece is on the flip, summer side, a reminder that both sides of old rugs are used by the tribes that weave them. The pile stays high with tips that have faded but left the deep magenta base. Uneven fade gives the rug its softness and depth, with one end putty and the other still saturated, a fiery orange band running through it. Using mixed knots, the weaver has created a simple motif in cream and saffron Berber knots that nestle into the single knotted field. It is clearly visible on the back, a loose lozenge network filled with small diamonds and scattered symbols. On the front, it is more a suggestion, a wilder, freer form and a wonderful color story on fizzy wool. With short braided fringe on one end that was likely cut and skillfully refinished. With other signs of careful use and repair.
