Traditional art gone pop. The checkerboard, often seen in rugs from this agricultural region, certainly references fields and crops, a symbol of abundance. But it is rendered into pure op-art here, free-hand pattern in brilliant marigold and black. High contrast and slight color variation magnify the visual effect. The palette hints at traditional henna, but is really a color all its own. It is an informal piece, curly high pile knotted loosely on a rag ground that pops through in areas of wear—a stripe here, a stray fabric there. The back reveals another rug entirely, graphic rag squares shot through with sky blue and lime green. With light yellow braided fringe on one end.
