Rich and funky, just a little bit rustic. A dark grey motif shadowed by cream sits against a field of great abrash. The high pile of faded red, orange and magenta combine for depth and richness. It would be a subtle color story were it not broken by small flashes of green and a strong yellow that bisects like a lightening bolt and echoes throughout. It has all the best hallmarks of a vintage Talsint rug including sawtooth selvedges, a variety of knots for a unique texture, and flat weave at both ends. Most tellingly, it displays an idiosyncratic motif and symbols about which little is known, coming from a very isolated tribal group. But there are clearly protective symbols here including small shields as well as the checkerboard associated with agriculture and prosperity. A simple border frames what could otherwise be a chaotic composition. With some expert repairs that do not detract from a unique and vibrant piece.
