Bejeweled and personal. With color and heart, this piece has creative touches throughout. A man’s name (Lahcen) shows who it was woven for though we have no way of knowing if he was a husband, son, or father. A beautiful composition uses color to great effect, with emphasis on the protective hamza, or Hand of Fatima, in the center. The sky blue, cobalt, tangerine, mint, red, and brown squares that surround it define the color scheme for the center panel and focus the eye. But the rest of the rug is rendered in brown against the matte cream field. With large lozenges, garlands on either side, and several colorful symbols, it remains open with thoughtful use of negative space. Some areas of wear particularly in the colored pile, but it is in good condition overall.
